IB.com British brand Fazane Malik scoops Midlands Fashion Designer of the Year Award

Friday, November 8th, 2013

Fazane Malik Age 30 from Ilkeston, Derbyshire recently won a prestigious Fashion Award ‘Midlands Independent Designer of the Year 2013 for her brand ‘Fazane Malik’

Fazane has worked in the industry for ten years. She started off working for a high-end clothing manufacturer developing ranges for the likes of Hobbs, Jaeger, Paul Smith, Whistles, Monsoon, Boden and many more. She started her label 2 years ago and left her job with the clothing manufacturer a year ago to concentrate on it fully.

The brand ethos is to create wearable capsule collections of easy pieces that will fit into any working woman’s existing wardrobe. “Not every woman wants to look like a fashion slave” says Fazane “so we offer really great classics that still look stylish and different but last for more than one season”

All styles are made to the highest standards which is testament to Fazane’s manufacturing background with each one individually hand signed and numbered for exclusivity. Each garment features the label’s signature monochrome printed silk as a lining, trim or detail.

Fazane was nominated for the award earlier this year and faced stiff competition from 5 other Midlands based brands and designers.

The awards took place on the 11th October in Birmingham hosted by ITV Presenter Lucy Kite.

The prestigious judging panel consisted of MFA Founder and Managing Director, Jenny Eason, Editor in Chief of Style Birmingham, Andrew Riley, Founder and Director of Rees, Bradley Hepburn, Founding Member of Young British Designers, Debra Hepburn, Fashion Expert Alison Lewy of Fashion Angel and Stylist Jason Forrest.

The annual event now in its 5th Year showcases collections from Independent, Emerging and Young designers from across the region as well as new for this year Make-up Artist, Stylist and Accessory Designer categories.

Sparrow Green Studios Chats To Independent Boutique!

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Today we're chatting to Katie Palmer, owner, designer and founder of  British scarf design brand Sparrow Green Studios. Her beautiful silk scarves are inspired by nature withsilk-turquoise-butterfly-scarf bees, beetles and butterflies featuring prominently in her designs. Read on to find out more about Katie's background, creations and plans for the future.......

How do you describe to people what you do and your design style?

I describe myself as a textile designer who makes scarves. I'd describe my designs as experiments in reflection, slightly kaleidoscopic with an influence from nature. I like that depending on how my customers wear their scarf, they can show off a different aspect of the design each time they wear it.

What sort of comments do you get about your designs?

I speak to a lot of my customers about wildlife, especially those interested in conservation. Many people love the fact that my designs are clearly hand drawn images and like the reflection and transition of colour I use in most of my work.

What is your background?

I studied printed textiles at the Surrey Institute which I completed in 1999. At my final show I was approached by an fashion agent who asked me to design textiles for fashion houses in New York. I produced two collections per year alongside a full time job as a retail sales manager and sold to various companies including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Armani Exchange. I have always loved to draw, so my recent work is a mixture of hand printed and digitally printed images taken from my drawings. I still make time to produce two collections per year for my agent and recently sold prints to Kenneth Cole and Gap Kids.
