BRAND INTERVIEW –Maliha Tabani (Founder & Creative Director for MALIHA London)

How do you describe to people what you do and your design style?

I design luxury womenswear, an extra special dress for that extra special occasion.

What sort of comments do you get about your designs?

Lovely colours, embroidery is beautiful, luxury, glamour!

What is your background?

Coming from a family that has fashion and textiles in its blood and a background in these fields that goes back several generations, I developed and nurtured my passion for fashion from my family environment, by working with my mother’s fashion label, her seamstresses and tailors and her boutique, from a young age. Growing up in this environment I gained priceless first-hand experience and knowledge of textiles and fashion, from production and dealing with clients, to sourcing suppliers and marketing new collections.

Which designers do you rate highly and why?

Mary Katrantzou - what she creates is beautiful-when you look at any of her clothing, you know its her.

Monique Lhuillier  -  she gives her designs a very personal touch, her backstage and models seem to love her and the way she works.

Carolina Herrera  - her dresses are just outstanding!

Tell us about your design process from concept, production and to the shelves…

I am always thinking of new designs, when I put it on paper, I send it over to my sample maker after drafting for a season. After samples are tried and tested with tweaks here and there, I then present my designs to buyers, boutiques etc. When they order, it goes into production.

How do you think your brand has developed?

Over the past year, my brand has developed from a range of design sketches on paper to being ready to be stocked in fashion boutiques and department stores. I hope to stock my brand in leading luxury fashion department stores in the future.

What do you dislike most about your job?

 

Nothing at the moment- maybe ask me this question a few years down the line..

What are your main achievements and what do you aim to achieve now? Past present and future

My main achievements are getting in touch with  buyers to stock my brand at their stores.

What advice would you have for anyone starting out in (your field)?

Do a lot of research and make a 5 year business plan before starting out! Always be positive and never give up!

Why do you think British design stands out on the global stage?

British design is classic, niche and has its luxury feel to it and its heritage.
