The classic peplum trend had been around since the 1800s, with women fashioning a short overskirt that flounced out from the waist. 1947 saw Christian Dior debut the ‘Bar suit and jacket’ introducing the nipped in waist and padded pemplumed hips. The trend became wildly popular and accessible to women of all shapes. The popularity of the peplum continued throughout the 40s with iconic film star Lauren Bascall in ‘To Have and Have Not’ (1944) being fitted by costume designed Milo Anderson in a checked peplum suit.
Therefore there is no surprise that this timeless look was popular amongst fashion pundits in fall of 2012 and continues its way into our wardrobes this Spring/Summer 2013. It kept popping up throughout 2012 and is here to stay for 2013, ranging from dresses, skirts, tops and trousers. The classic feminine silhouette has a timeless appeal so fear not your peplum pieces are not items of the past and can be reworked to fit spring 2013. (more...)
